in Technology

Tech giant Apple revealed that the company sold an estimated 9 million of the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C during the opening weekend of sales. The sales of the new smartphones broke records and is much better than the iPhone manufacturers’ analyst expected. They forecasted 7.75 million at the high end and 5 million at the low end.

"This is our best iPhone launch yet―more than nine million new iPhones sold, a new record for first weekend sales," Apple's CEO Tim Cook said in a statement.

Although Apple didn’t break down how many iPhone 5s and 5c smartphones it sold in the press release, the most popular model seemed to be the gold iPhone 5s. The latest gadget, which which Apple is offering for the first time, was sold out in many stores almost immediately on Friday morning (September 20, 2013). Customers were overwhelmingly choosing the gold-colored model over the other two colors.

"It's new and shiny," the first customer in line outside an Apple store at Lenox Square mall in suburban Atlanta said. Meanwhile, another one who was waiting for an iPhone 5S in Beijing explained: “I don’t care what’s inside the device. Chinese people like gold.”

The gold iPhone 5S officially went on sale on Friday (September 20, 2013).

Demand for the gold iPhone 5S has been so incredible that Apple has already asked its suppliers to increase the production of the handset to meet demand.

"The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and while we've sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5s, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly. We appreciate everyone's patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone," said Tim Cook.

Demand for the iPhone 5S exceeded the initial supply and the gold-colored model is a hot commodity.

Apple also revealed that approximately 200 million iOS devices are now running iOS 7. In addition, the company said that it had 11 million listening hours over the weekend for iTunes Radio, which is a new music streaming service of Apple.

The gold iPhone 5S sold out first, followed by space gray when it hit stores on Friday (September 20, 2013).
