How to Decide What to Blog

in Technology

If like me you intend to use your Blog as the hub of you social media marketing (SMM) then you will need to post to your Blog regularly. I aim to do a post a day because keeping the Blog fresh with new content helps it in the Google search rankings.

Deciding what to post about is probably the biggest challenge you will face when adopting this approach. A key thing to remember is that your Blog is like your 'house' on the internet and is where you invite people to get to know more about you. As part of that process of getting to know you they may or may not buy something off you. As a minimum you at least want them to find your Blog interesting enough to subscribe to, or bookmark to some back and visit again.

This is on the basis they may have a friend looking for what you are offering and they then refer the friend to you Blog.

I find it is good to strike a balance in posting about your niche market and things that you find interesting or your actual interests. This may seem odd, but if you post about one of your interests it makes you appear more genuine and trustworthy - a real person.

I use Google Alerts as my source for the latest news is in my niche market and interests. Setting up a Google Alert to be emailed to you once a day is very easy. Just do the following steps:

1. Sign into your Google account

2. In the web address bar type Google.com/alerts

3. This brings you to the page where you set up your alerts

4. On the right of the screen is a box saying Create a Google Alert

5. Where it says Search Term type allintitle:XXXXXX where XXXXXX is the topic you are interested in - maybe network marketing. So the full line would like this

 allintitle:network marketing .

6. Google will now only return stories where the term network marketing is in the title of whatever document it finds. This avoids Google including documents where the term network marketing appears anywhere. If the term appears in the title there is a much higher chance it will be relevant.

7. Leave Type set at Comprehensive so Google will trawl news items, forum postings, Blogs, articles the lot.

8. Leave How often at once a day

9. Deliver to should be the email account for which you signed in at step one

10. Now click on the 'Create Alert' button

11. This will take you to a new page. To test your alert click on the Search Term you have just created in the Search Term column.

12. You should get some results backs with various stories all with the term network marketing in the title.

13. You will now receive a Google Alert each day and you can simply click on the different stories that take your interest and base a post on one of the stories.

14. I suggest setting up about 5 alerts that should be enough material to get your creative juices flowing and enable you to produce a post.
